What to Expect as a Casual
Casual work with us is shift by shift. It can be a great fit if you want flexible, varied work, but it also means hours are never guaranteed, and each shift is offered and accepted on its own.
Casual work is offered shift by shift. When we have work, we offer it to you and you choose whether to accept or decline. We are not obliged to offer you work, and you are not obliged to accept it.
To help us match you to suitable shifts, let your coordinator know your general availability, and give us a heads up by the Wednesday prior about any days you cannot work the following week. This just helps us know who to contact. You can always decline a shift we offer.
Casual work suits people who want flexible, variable hours rather than a set roster. If you need guaranteed hours, fixed days, or a regular weekly pattern, casual may not be the right fit, because the hours change week to week and are never guaranteed.
Our need for casual workers is entirely driven by client demand. There may be days or even weeks when no shifts are available.
Work typically slows down during winter, so fewer opportunities should be expected during that period.
We will text you in the late afternoon offering you a shift for the next day. If you cannot make it, let us know as soon as you can. If you do not receive a text, we have no work for you that day.
Start times are usually between 5 to 6am, but may vary. Your text message will confirm the exact time to report. Be ready to go at the time stated, and aim to arrive 5 to 10 minutes early so you are set to start on time.
Days can be long. 12 hour days are not uncommon.
Men at Work casuals
We do not meet staff directly onsite. You must report to the Yard first, where we load trucks as a team before heading to site.
The Temp Company casuals
You may be sent straight to a site or to a client's yard rather than to our Yard. Your reporting location will not always be the same, so check your text each time for exactly where to go.
Although some work may be cancelled due to weather, expect to work in all kinds of weather, hot, cold, wet, windy.
You will get regular breaks throughout the day, but be prepared to be on your feet for long periods of time.
On some sites toilets can be hard to locate. If you need one, there will always be someone to swap you out and provide a vehicle so you can get to the nearest facilities.
Bring your own food, as visiting a shop may not be possible. Always pack extra layers. You can take layers off if you get too hot, but if you are cold without enough on, you will be stuck.
It is important that you follow our Code of Conduct, policies, and procedures. Your attitude and performance matter, and they are noticed.
Many of our full time team members started as casuals, so if you are reliable, show up with a positive attitude, and do the job well, you will put yourself in a strong position for more work or future opportunities.
We reserve the right to cease offering further work to casual employees at any time, without notice, where work is no longer required or where conduct or performance does not meet expectations.
